I want to be able to a proficient acoustic blues guitar play, but i don't know where to start. I'm an intermediate musician having played the saxophone for 10 years and i'm about an advanced beginner at the guitar. I want to take my guitar playing in the blues area to another level but i don't know what to practice, what to learn, or how to go about doing any of that. Any suggestions on books, tutorials, or ways of learning acoustic blues guitar would be extremely helpful, thanks

If you’d like to skip to the solution I found for quality blues backing tracks, click here. Otherwise, read on!

One of the hardest things for a musician to do is play in a vacuum. Now, I don‘t mean playing in outer space, although that would be pretty darn hard too, but playing alone, without the benefit of a band or backing.

This is especially tough for the blues musician, where the heart and feel is so much of the music.

Now you could, and probably should, get yourself a band. There are a lot of benefits to hooking up with other likeminded musicians, and it will make your music better even if you’re already better than them.

But musicians are, well, musicians, which means there’s a good chance that getting the band together for regular practice is going to be about as easy as herding cats. Drunken, surly cats.

So what do you do when you need to practice but you don’t have anyone to play with?

Backing tracks. Good quality backing tracks can be the difference between being a pro and being an “also ran.” They allow you to practice anytime you want, for as long as you want, with professional musicians.

It’s a lot like having your own band jammed into your computer, without the mess.

The trick with blues backing tracks is to get the right ones. Crappy MIDI recordings by “Joe Schmo and his Half Pipe Band” aren’t going to do it. You need to get backing tracks that are professional quality so that you can make your music professional quality.

You’ve probably heard that practice makes perfect but that, quite frankly, is bullpucky. Perfect practice makes perfect. You need to be practicing with tracks that are flawless so that your music will be flawless.

This isn’t something you’re going to get with crappy downloads off the Internet.

That’s why I recommend <a style="color: blue; text-decoration: underline;" href="http://bluesbackingtracks.org/info/go-to-quality-blues-backing-track/ target="_blank"">50 Blues professional backing tracks as seen in Guitar Player and Total Guitar magazines.

They’re top quality, priced to be a steal and you get fifty different tracks so that you can develop every aspect of your sound. High quality blues backing tracks will allow you to practice at your own pace, mastering the skills you to need to produce that killer sound.

There’s no doubt, you’re going to have to bust your butt to become a great musician, but buying these tracks is going to make things a whole lot easier for you. You don’t have to do it this way, but there’s no advantage to turning your back on the benefits of quality blues backing tracks.

Now get off the stinking Internet and get playing!

So, you’re looking for some outstanding blues backing tracks. You’ve found some you can download for free, and some that are for sale at various prices. What are blues dudes like us to do when trying to figure out what’s worth it and what’s not?

Let’s talk about downloads of free blues backing tracks. Typically you’ve got nothing to lose by downloading them and giving them a listen, as long as it’s a legitimate site and there no risk of actually downloading a computer virus. Know who you’re dealing with. You might find a few real gems. I find that most times the free stuff is pretty bad though, but once in awhile you hit the jackpot.

When it’s time to pay money for your blues jam backing tracks, well…now it’s time to get picky, real picky. For me, one of the worst things that can happen is paying for some guitar backing tracks and ending up with cheesy MIDI blues backing tracks. Those are tracks produced inside a computer with keyboards playing synthetic instruments. That’s a real let down; no soul, no groove.

You’re looking for real instruments; a real blues band playing behind you. That’s one of the hallmarks of professional backing tracks. Never again will I buy tracks from someone who doesn’t provide a LOT of lengthy demos first so I can hear the quality of them before laying down my hard earned cash.

The other thing to look for is volume, and I’m not talking about turning your guitar amp up to eleven.

Even if you have really good backing tracks, if you only have a couple you’re going to get bored really fast. You also won’t be expanding your abilities by playing in a lot of different styles. So, you need professional tracks and a lot of them in many different styles.

Also, once you have all these backing tracks at your disposal, you may notice that you need some new licks and may need to expand your knowledge a little more. It never hurts to educate yourself on a regular basis and I think I’ll be talking more about that here in the future.

In the meantime, I’m checking things out and will have some recommendations soon. I’ll tell you, there’s nothing like when you find that perfect slow blues backing track and you can just wail. That’s serious fun!

So, one more time a quick sum up. You need lots of tracks in many varieties and your blues backing tracks need to be professional, not cheesy.

Ah yes, the Blues Backing Tracks blog is finally live!

I intend to make this a fantastic hang out for blues musicians looking for high quality backing tracks for practicing, jamming, performing, or whatever floats your boat.

There are a lot of backing tracks available out there, from free downloads to expensive professional backing tracks for live performance.

Unfortunately, price is often no indicator of actual quality. There’s a lot of junk out there and I’m going to help you avoid it if at all possible. I’ll be providing tips and hints for what you’re looking for and what to stay away from.

While I come at this from a guitar player’s perspective, good backing tracks will work for just about any instrument like harmonica, sax, vocals; any soloist really.

Keep your eye out for the next post, we’re gonna’ have some jammin’ fun with the best blues backing tracks anywhere!
